On February 8, an article was posted about controversy surrounding the cover of the newest issue of Vogue magazine. The March issue is dedicated to diversity in beauty, but many critics say it is not diverse enough in body shape and color. Some have pointed out that one model's hand covers the torso of plus-sized model, Ashley Graham which has prompted fans to accuse the magazine of concealing her body. Others have criticized the magazine for featuring an Asian-American woman on the cover for the first time but with six other non-Asian-Americans. Graham's response to this was in defense of the issue's cover stating, “I chose to pose like that. No one told me to do anything.” I think this article is relevant because of all the stigma surrounding diversity in the media. Representation is important and as an asian female, I grew up looking for the asian girl in the TV show or movie because it made me feel included. |

Jax, a five-year-old boy, told his mother that he wanted to shave his head so he could look like his friend, Reddy. Reddy is African-american and Jax is Caucasian, but according to Jax, the only difference between them was their hair style. His main goal for his haircut was to confuse his teacher so the teacher would not be able to tell him or his friend apart. What his haircut actually did was show proof that hate and prejudice is something that is taught. I really liked this story because it showed how innocent and pure some children may be. It restores my faith in humanity to know that hope still exists and that some children will grow up without any bias toward people in the minority. |
These artifacts are two of my best current event posts. I liked these two the most because I felt like I could connect with them. Representation is important to me because it makes me feel included. Seeing a character similar to me gives me someone who I feel I can relate to. The story about the five-year-old boy also struck a chord with me because it warmed my heart to read how innocent he was. In a world full of prejudice, it is refreshing to read something that involved accepting a person for who they are.
